Bayern, Oktoberfest, BMW, Einstein, Beer!

Contemporary Konigshof Hotel alongside the historic Palace of Justice

Just some words associated with Munich, the capital of Bavaria, a city famous its positivity, but also infamous for some of its darker moments such as being associated with the Nazi’s and their first concentration camp Dachau, the Munich Air Disaster and the Olympics massacre.

Heavily damaged during the 2nd world war, Munich has been rebuilt with an eclectic mix of modern and historic buildings sitting comfortably side by side.

Clearly, the Bavarians are more compromising in their planning regulations than the UK system which seems to stifle individual design.

As a property person that takes delight in modern buildings, it is wonderful to see the neutral impact of a super modern department store occupied by United Colours of Benneton (remember them??) alongside natural German retailers in traditional central European, solid stone constructed buildings.

There are almost as many churches are there are traditional, vaulted ceilinged beer halls with a range construction methods and styles but all impressive! The Hofbräuhaus is worthy of multiple visits, which we did!

But there seems to be only 1 football team, the mighty Bayern Munich, which was the reason for our visit to Munich.

Passing the Alliance Arena on our way from the airport to the city centre on Saturday night, it was lit up like a glowing red beacon of modernity, truly impressive.

In contrast, Bayern’s campus, the focus of our visit, is a utilitarian, grey concrete collection of buildings and pitches in a wind swept environment. More akin to a university than a football academy.

Bayern Campus probably looks very different when its not minus 3 degrees and blowing a blizzard…….but despite the challenging weather conditions, we had the joy of watching our son’s Brentford youth team take on Bayern’s youth team.

Like Celtic a few days later, we left Bayern disappointed with the result but full of positive memories of a great trip to Munich.

Fabulous historic and modern buildings, great food and beer and bracing fresh air!
